After more than a two decade hiatus, a local runners group, the Rockford Area Convention & Tourism Bureau as well as representatives from local public and civic organizations have announced plans for a resurrected Rockford Marathon to be held Sunday, May 18, 2008, in Illinois' third largest city.
The Rockford Road Runners announced the plans for the revived marathon, which will wend its way through city streets, at a community press conference held on August 1. Producing the marathon will be Special Events Management, the largest producer of special events in the Midwest including runs/walks and street festivals (www.chicagoevents.com).
More than 2,000 runners are estimated to participate in the Rockford Marathon which will kick off at 7:00 a.m. Runners will be able to participate in either a full (26.2 mile) or half (13.1 mile) marathon or as part of a 4-person relay team.

The Rockford Marathon is working closely with its sponsors, vendors and the City of Rockford to ensure that every participant will have adequate water and nutrition replenishment along the course. A minimum of 13 water stops are planned. Contingency plans will be in place in the event of unseasonably warm temperatures to protect the well being of our runners.
Proceeds from the Rockford Marathon will benefit the Community Needs Fund at the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. This permanent endowed fund supports a wide variety of charitable projects related to health and human services, education, children, youth and families, neighborhoods, and community and economic development.
